- New housing projects promote sustainable lifestyle with fantastic transport links close to Walsall stations and shops for young couples.
Disused office buildings in Walsall are to be repurposed as urban apartments under planning permission granted by the council to developers in June 2020. Birmingham-based Kalam Family Property Developers have taken on three town centre sites together with experienced designers Lapworth Architects. Both parties are looking to transform them into housing to meet local needs and to help improve Walsall town centre as part of the council’s masterplan to boost the local economy.
Demand for office space in the town centre has decreased in recent years, with many businesses relocating out of the centre into bigger accommodation, meaning that plenty of buildings have fallen into a state of disrepair – making locals feel unsafe and promoting anti-social behaviour. This hat-trick of housing developments by local experts is looking to solve these problems and improve well-being and sustainable development in Walsall.
Manraj Singh of Lapworth Architects
"We understand that the application site has also been marketed for a considerably long period of time and very little interest has been shown in renting an office of this size and within this location.
"Furthermore the property is in what can only be described as highly sustainable location - the site is in within walking distance of all the facilities one would expect within a town centre”.
The joint venture between Lapworth Architects and Kalam Family Property Developers looks to bring these buildings back into use with small apartments for singles or couples designed for convenient town centre living, helping to bolster the local economy and improve safety and security in the three locations they’ve won planning permissions for.
Parking isn’t an issue for the would-be urbanites – although there are spaces nearby thanks to the previous use as an office, the location of the three sites is convenient for commuters as they are located a few minutes’ walk from Walsall train and bus stations.
Lapworth Architects have worked on dozens of mixed-use projects in the West Midlands and, together with Kalam Family Property Development, are a safe pair of hands for these exciting projects that will help to bring life and investment back to Walsall town centre.
